Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Camden Town Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Camden Town is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out the principles and arrangements that guide our work on all sites where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
We aim to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our gardening activities. Our core objectives are to identify and control risks, comply with applicable health and safety legislation, promote safe working practices, and foster a culture in which everyone accepts their responsibilities for safety.
We integrate health and safety considerations into planning, scheduling and delivering all gardening services, including regular maintenance, landscaping, lawn care, hedge cutting, planting and waste handling.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Camden Town has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes providing adequate resources, equipment, information, instruction and supervision to ensure that work is carried out safely and without unacceptable risk.
Managers will ensure that risk assessments are completed and kept up to date, that safe systems of work are established for all key gardening tasks, and that employees are competent and properly trained. They will review accidents, near misses and incidents and take prompt corrective action where necessary.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and regular subcontractors share responsibility for health and safety while working for Gardeners Camden Town. Individuals must take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Employees are required to follow site rules and safe working procedures, use equipment and personal protective equipment correctly, report hazards and defects promptly, and cooperate fully with any training, supervision or investigations related to health and safety.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Camden Town conducts risk assessments for typical gardening tasks, such as grass cutting, brush cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, soil preparation, paving works within scope, and handling of green waste and materials.
Where a task presents significant risk, a specific method statement and safe system of work will be prepared. Work will only proceed when appropriate control measures are in place, such as protective clothing, guarding, safe access, and exclusion zones to protect members of the public.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery and equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and compactors. All equipment will be maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly in line with manufacturer guidance and relevant regulations.
When vehicles are used for transporting staff, tools and materials, drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow the Highway Code and conduct pre-use checks. Loading and unloading will be managed to prevent injury, slips, trips, falls or traffic incidents.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Camden Town will provide suitable personal protective equipment free of charge where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and protective clothing.
Employees must wear the specified protective equipment for each task, look after it properly and report any damage or loss so that it can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals or other hazardous substances, we will comply with relevant regulations governing storage, transport, handling, application and disposal. Only trained and authorised personnel may use such products, and they must follow manufacturer instructions and control measures identified in risk assessments.
Where possible, we seek to minimise the use of chemicals and adopt environmentally responsible methods of pest, weed and disease control.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening and landscaping often involve lifting, carrying, digging, bending and repetitive tasks. We aim to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injury through planning, use of mechanical aids where practical, and appropriate manual handling techniques.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting, correct posture and ways of organising work to reduce strain. Heavy or awkward loads must be shared, mechanical assistance must be used where available, and no one should attempt to lift more than they can manage safely.
Public and Client Safety
Our teams work in domestic gardens, shared outdoor spaces and commercial premises. We take care to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and passers-by from the risks arising from our activities.
This includes setting up barriers or warning signs where necessary, managing cables and hoses to prevent trips, controlling noise and dust as far as reasonably practicable, and scheduling high risk tasks to minimise contact with the public. We keep work areas tidy and remove waste promptly to avoid hazards.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Gardeners Camden Town provides induction and ongoing training relevant to each role, covering safe use of gardening equipment, hazard awareness, manual handling, use of protective equipment and emergency procedures.
We encourage open communication about safety concerns and suggestions for improvement. Employees are consulted on health and safety matters that affect them and are expected to participate actively in maintaining a safe working environment.
First Aid, Accidents and Emergencies
Appropriate first aid provisions are made for teams working on site. Employees must report all accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences as soon as practicable so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of serious injury, fire, chemical exposure or other incidents, are communicated to staff and reviewed regularly. Where required, coordination with clients on emergency arrangements will be established before work starts.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We monitor our health and safety performance through inspections, equipment checks, incident reports and feedback from staff and clients. Lessons learned from incidents and near misses are used to update risk assessments, procedures and training.
This policy is reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains suitable, adequate and effective for the range of gardening and maintenance services provided by Gardeners Camden Town. Updated versions will be communicated to all employees and made available to clients on request.
